Encephalitis is nothing in itself a disease but a turn of inflammation of the brain. There are many causes. High on the list are infections that are caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi, and other agents. After epilepsy, infection is the most common cause of the seizure and of infections, the distemper virus stands as number one.

Encephalitis fits are different. There are fewer tendencies for ado to run. It is more likely to stand, sit, or lie in one spot until the fit is over. Also, as with epilepsy, the convulsions come at closer and closer intervals until the dog may die in a long, almost continuous convulsion. Or the convulsions may stop and a twitch may develop, depending on what part of the brain or spinal cord is affected. Rabies is a primary cause of encephalitis. Meningitis too produces fits and sometimes paints the back. Some cases may be cured with an anti-microbial rusher, microfilm in vessels of the brain, and migrating young roundworms can cause encephalitis.

Hydrocephalus, or water on the brain, is a rare congenital defect and is more common than brain tumors; both of these may but not necessarily cause seizures.

• The disease encephalitis mainly occurs in dogs aged 2 to 3 years.
• Frequent seizures are one of the common symptoms of the disease. Though occasional seizures occur due to encephalitis dogs also suffer from sudden unconsciousness due to epilepsy, exposure to toxic chemicals and gases, and other unknown reasons.
• A dog with encephalitis often suffers from the feeling of lethargy and lack of muscle coordination. Like the incidence of seizure, the occurrence of the feeling of lethargy and poor muscular coordination may also be caused other than the incidence of encephalitis. Lethargy is one of the common symptoms of any kind of illness in dogs. Whereas, the lack of coordination of the muscles may also be the result of other disorders like neurological disorders and effects of convulsive activities like the presence of disturbances in the inner ear disease like vestibular disease or damaged ear drums.
• Pacing in a circular motion is one of the common symptoms of dog encephalitis. The affected dog would be seen circling around for a prolonged period. The dogs would be seen as agitated and aggressive. A very common symptom of the dog suffering from the disease is that it would press its head against walls and hard objects.

A dog may suffer from two main types of encephalitis that either show up symptoms at a slow process or in a rapid process. Though the disease may affect dogs of all breeds but scientific research has shown that certain breeds of dogs like Pugs, Poodles, Pomeranians, and Pit Bulls dogs are prone to the disease.
