The parathyroid glands are attached to the thyroid glands. When one of these glands develops a lesion, it may secrete an excess hormone, which eventually is the cause of the demineralization of bone, resulting in lameness and even fractures from minor stress. The common reason behind the development of excess production of the parathyroid hormone is the growth of a tumor known as an adenoma in any of the parathyroid glands.
