The parathyroid glands are attached to the thyroid glands. When one of these glands develops a lesion, it may secrete an excess hormone, which eventually is the cause of the demineralization of bone, resulting in lameness and even fractures from minor stress. The bones of the jaws may become soft to the touch. A similar situation develops when other problems cause ass enlargement arid increase secretion of hormones. This is called secondary hyperparathyroidism. The main factor responsible for the development of dog hyperparathyroidism is the excess production of the parathyroid hormone or the PTH. Due to increased production of the PTH the level of calcium increases in the main bloodstream. Excess calcium can lead to several forms of illness in dogs.

The common reason behind the development of excess production of the parathyroid hormone is the growth of a tumor known as an adenoma in any of the parathyroid glands. Though rare the tumors can also be malignant in form as well. The disease can occur both in male and female dogs. The dogs belonging to the Keeshonds are quite prone to the disease. The disease can be easily diagnosed in dogs. The following are the ways by which a dog’s hyperparathyroidism is determined. Dogs of an average age of 10 years are often vulnerable to the disease.

Dog Hyperparathyroidism Information

  • On taking your dog to a vet clinic the doctor would at first go through the entire medical history of the pet. He would also go for a complete clinical checkup as well.
  • To confirm the increased levels of calcium in the blood the initial blood test is also done.
  • Urinalysis of the dog is also done.
  • A study of the ultrasound taken of the neck and the other suspected affected internal organs of the body are also done.
  • X-rays of the other internal organs of the body were also done.
  • To check out the proper functioning of the electronic activity of the heart the vet also takes the help of the electrocardiogram.

In case you find that your dog is suffering from a disease called dog hyperparathyroidism you are recommended to provide your dog with the best possible medication and medical treatment facilities. In severe cases, doctors may conduct surgery to remove the abnormal parathyroid gland. Sometimes in cases of dangerous levels of calcium content in the blood intravenous injections and other strong but effective medications a recommended by a veterinary surgeon.

Apart from clinical attention, you are also recommended to take proper home care for your dear doggy. You are advised to give proper medicines to your dog in the right dosage as prescribed by the vet surgeon. If the dog has undergone an operation it might suffer from calcium for around 1 to 7 days after the operation. Provide proper home remedies that would help your dog to revive from heavy panting, nervousness, twitching of muscles, cramping of legs, stiff gaits, and occasional seizures. You may not take any preventive care of the disease as there are no such primary causes that lead to its development.
