Dog Throat Problems

Dog Throat ProblemsThere are various dog throat problems that a dog owner may not be aware of. Many enlarged or inflamed tonsils can be removed by veterinarians. Today this surgery is virtually never performed on either humans or dogs. Tonsillitis responds to many medications.

Pharyngitis and Laryngitis are used to designate inflammation of the pharynx and larynx virus diseases and bacterial agents, such as streptococcal diseases, will all inflame the throat including the tonsils and the surrounding glands. The small lymph nodes and the salivary glands may also become inflamed. When these glands are felt between the finger and thumb, they may appear to be round instead of flat, as they normally are.

Coughing that is induced by any of these conditions tends to irritate these areas just as it does in humans. The tonsils and epiglottis take a great deal of strain. Tonsils may be found so greatly enlarged that they look swollen in the dog’s throat. The sight or smell of food causes the production of saliva and the gland becomes distended. If it is squeezed, the pressure will sometimes push the obstruction into the mouth. If this does not work, an incision through the skin must be made by the veterinarian and the thick, viscous, syrupy fluid will be drained out. Don’t ever attempt to operate on the dog yourself; a puncture in the wrong place might sever the large jugular vein after proper medication. After the surgery of the dog’s throat, the duct is freed, the incision heals, and the gland functions normally. In some cases, the gland must be removed surgically.

One of the most common causes for which dogs are taken to a vet surgeon mainly for choking. Often the pet owners misinterpret pet owners as coughing or vomiting disorders. In case of a true incidence of choking your dog should be taken under immediate medical supervision. The choking mainly takes place because of the curious nature of the dog which leads to indiscriminate eating of food items that often get stuck in the throat. The things that mainly get stuck in the throat are the things like large food particles, toys, bones, cloth pieces, metal, and even fish hooks. The following are the causes of dog throat problems.

  • The throat may get choked several times due to the swelling of the glands. Mainly during an infection such as throat swelling takes place.
  • Neck injury is also one of the causes behind the development of throat choking. In most cases, the dog gets hurt due to the collars and ropes. Several times choking due to collars have taken place if the dog has happened to jump over a wall but has not been able to reach the ground or has simply been hanging due to some accident.

The throat choking problem is quite common with the pups as well. The pups tend to jump or drag themselves on any object that they find to be curious to pounce upon. This might often result in the problem of dog throat choking. In case of throat choking you may watch for the symptoms like dragging, gagging, difficulty in swallowing, experiencing breathing problems, repeated pawing inside the mouth, and a depressed and unhappy mood.
