Trichinae are carried in the flesh of infected dogs. Since an infestation is difficult to diagnose in a live dog, not many cases have been reported that could be identified as trichinosis. Most of those that have been detected occurred when both the dog and its owner had a meal from the same undercooked pork. In several cases, both had eaten undercooked bear meat. Since there is no remedy for trichinosis, don’t feed pets raw or undercooked pork. Hunters should not feed raw bear meat, raw raccoon, or the raw flesh of any other meat-eating dog. Never allow a dog to eat dead rats or mice which have been living in garbage. Garbage-fed hogs that die should be buried deeply, after first being covered with quicklime, to prevent dogs or wild dogs from eating them.
