Dog Trichinae Trichinosis
Trichinae are carried in the flesh of infected dogs. Since an infestation is difficult to diagnose in a live dog, not many cases have been reported that could be identified as trichinosis. Most of those that have been detected occurred when both the dog and its owner had a meal from the same undercooked pork. In several cases, both had eaten undercooked bear meat. In these instances, the owner has reported that a dog experienced the same symptoms. Usually, a domestic pet is not known to have had trichinosis until a post-mortem reveals it.
It is amazing, however, that a large proportion of both dogs and cats are found to have had an undetected infestation. One study showed that 8 percent of those examined were infested. When the cysts are forming in the muscles of the dog, there is pain and stiffness, depending in severity upon how many trichinae there are present. The dog may have a fever, loose stools, loss of appetite, and some grunting when it has to move. It is difficult to get it to show the reactions of a normal dog in play or in any activity in which exertion is required.
Since there is no remedy for trichinosis, don’t feed pets raw or undercooked pork. Hunters should not feed raw bear meat, raw raccoon, or the raw flesh of any other meat-eating dog. Never allow a dog to eat dead rats or mice which have been living in garbage. Garbage-fed hogs that die should be buried deeply, after first being covered with quicklime, to prevent dogs or wild dogs from eating them.
To avoid the incidence of trichinae trichinosis you are recommended to be careful of providing your dog with proper meat that would not result in the disease called dog trichinae trichinosis. You are recommended not to provide your dog with pork as many times the meat is infested with the germs of the dog trichinae trichinosis. The following meats like chicken, lamb, beef, turkey, and eggs are quite healthy for your dog.
