Dog Twisted Uterus
Occasionally the uterus becomes twisted. Once in a while, a puppy manages to get down one horn of the uterus and up the other so that it is part way in each and its back is toward the body of the uterus. Manipulation can generally affect a normal delivery, but by herself, the mother may not be able to expel a live puppy. The following are some disorders related to a dog’s uterus.
Dog Uterus Information
Pyometra – Pyometra is one of the most common and fatal disorders among female dogs. It is an infection caused due to hormonal uterus changes in adult female dogs. If the infection in the uterus is not treated properly the dog may die out of sepsis or failure of the uterus organ. Even spayed female dogs may get attacked with the disease when the small left-out part of the uterus develops the infection.
Though female dogs of any age can get affected by the disease the symptoms of the infection are mainly seen in dogs that are more than 8 years of age. The symptoms can also be seen when the dog has crossed about 4 to 12 weeks after it has experienced the heat session. The symptoms of the disease include thick bloody pus-filled vaginal discharge along with the feeling of lethargy, weakness, anorectic, the increased tendency of drinking and consequent urination, increased vomiting tendency, and the occurrence of diarrhea.
The vaginal discharge occurs when the cervix remains open while there is no such discharge if the cervix remains closed. The other symptoms include the enlargement of the abdomen, the experience of shock, and ultimate coma. The method of diagnosis is based on the medical background of the dog. As in most cases, the dogs suffering from the disease are unsprayed the diagnosis is mainly done by analyzing the vaginal discharge, blood culture and counts, urinalysis, serum chemistries, ultrasound, X-rays, and such.
Uterine Rupture – Though such incidence is quite uncommon certain cases like the pyometra or the dystocia may cause the rapture of the uterus. The uterus has a certain limit to stretch and in case it stretches beyond its limit, the dog may die out of peritonitis and septic shock. Several times during labor pain the weak walls of the uterus may rupture resulting in the birth of the puppies in the abdomen. Under such circumstances, the dog does very quickly even before being taken for emergency care. The dogs who are physically very weak, suffer from abdominal pain, extreme weakness and occasional sessions of getting collapsed rapid respiratory disorder, and shock.
The method of diagnosis depends upon the medical history of the canine patient, physical examination like X-rays, and testing of the abdominal fluids.
Metritis – Metritis is another type of bacterial infection occurring in the uterus. Compared to the disease pyometra this infectious disorder advances very rapidly and causes sepsis. The symptoms of the disease include poor production of milk, vomiting tendency, foul-smelling discharge from the vagina, loss of appetite, and feeling of weakness.
You are recommended to take your dog to a good doctor in case you find that your dog is suffering from the above-mentioned symptoms.
